Tips for Settling Into Your New Neighbourhood
Get to Know Your Neighbours
- Why it matters: Building relationships with those around you fosters a sense of belonging and support.
- How to start: Say hello – Take the time to say a friendly hello and introduce yourself to your neighbours. Try to remember names as best you can, it can be tricky to remember everyone’s but it’s nice to show you’ve listened and that you care. Smile – Make sure to flash your neighbours a friendly smile when you pass them, whether you’re rushing out the door or out walking the dog. It’s a good habit to get into and is sure to make a difference!
Explore Local Amenities
- Discover what’s nearby: Locate essential services like grocery stores, pharmacies, schools, parks and public transport. Check out the local library and community centre to see what local events you can get involved in.
- Tip: Take a walk around the neighbourhood, you see more on foot and check out local businesses to feel more at home.
Join or Start Community Groups
- Stay connected: Many neighbourhoods have WhatsApp or Facebook groups to keep residents informed and connected.
- Take initiative: If your community doesn’t have one yet, starting a group can be a great way to bring people together.
Get Involved in Community Events
- What to expect: Activities like coffee socials, street feasts, or workshops are a great way to meet people and feel part of the community.
- How to join: Keep an eye out for flyers, notices, or announcements about upcoming events, or connect with your Home Together Community Liaison Officer.
Create a Sense of Home
- Personal touches: Unpacking and adding personal elements to your home will make the space feel more like yours.
- Connect with nature: Plant flowers or set up a small garden (even on a balcony) to create a welcoming outdoor space.
Know Who to Contact
- Stay informed: Get the contact details for your property management team, residents’ association, or community leaders.
- Emergency contacts: Make a list of local emergency numbers, like medical services, utilities, and nearby clinics.
