November 10th – Start a Virtual Book Club (Suggested Activity)
Readers unite! Starting your own neighbourhood book club is a great way to ignite a passion for reading, find new books and have some brilliant conversations.
It’s also a lovely opportunity for people who are new to the area to get to know their neighbours. Plus, the whole thing can be done virtually!
What You Need:
- Books
- Readers
- A device for video chatting
Steps:
Find your fellow-book lovers
Reach out to your neighbours and ask them to join your book club! Set up a WhatsApp, Facebook or email group and ask your neighbours to join.
By no means does your book club need to have a huge number of people in it, you really only need 3-5 people to begin with.
Depending on what you are reading, you could encourage parents to get teenage readers involved!
Organise your first meeting
Once you have interest from a few neighbours, organise a meeting over virtual tea and cake via video call!
At your first meeting you can get a real sense of what everyone’s reading interests are; talk about your favourite authors, what you’ve been reading lately or maybe about why you want to be reading more!
Decide within the group what your system for choosing a book will be, when you would like to have read your first book by, and when you’ll have your next meeting.
Choose your book
Have a chat with your group and figure out you’re going to read!
There are loads of brilliant online resources for free ebooks that could be handy in areas where libraries are still closed, or where there isn’t easy access to books.
Check out Irish libraries online, where there are tons of ebooks available for free. All you need is a library card!
Be consistent
A book club is a brilliant incentive for actually getting a book finished. Be sure to keep up your book club meetings and motivate each other to keep reading!
